Aboriginal education

CCGPS is committed to ensuring that all children succeed in their education, and in doing this, aim to eliminate the achievement gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and non-indigenous students. CCGPS schools provide indigenous students with:

  • a Personalised Learing Plan (PLP) that is developed with class teachers and parents
  • specific Aboriginal units of work as well as integrated cultural knowledge across all subjects
  • Integrated Aboriginal perspectives into classroom lessons and school initiatives, including local stories.
  • NAIDOC celebrations
  • participation in cultural camps to visit local Aboriginal sites and experience a traditional lifestyle
  • cultural events such as Close the Gap Day
  • participation in programs targeted to indigenous students such as and PhotoVoice and Books in Homes
  • assistance and support from the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and school Aboriginal Education Teams
  • opportunities to join the junior AECG
  • free in-school hearing tests
  • professional training for teachers for programs designed to help Aboriginal students, eg. Stronger Smarter and Accelerated Literacy
  • Aboriginal staff members employed across our schools
  • initiatives to improve the attendance of Aboriginal students.
