Koe-Nara is an Aboriginal word meaning family. The Schools as Community Centres initiative is funded by Families NSW. They provide services for families with children aged up to 8 years. Services include:
- playgroup for local families
- playgroup for parents under 25
- reading to children at Cessnock Market Place and at selected homes
- presents early literacy information to local schools and early childhood settings
- parent library and book exchange
- baby clothes exchange
- fruit and vegetable co-op
- parenting programs
- support group for first-time parents
- activities for dads and their children
- transition programs for students starting school next year
